SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
On the green
At Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, located in Canada’s first national park in Banff, Alberta, we are committed to providing players with an eco-friendly experience. Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course is certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. As environmental stewards, our goal is to implement initiatives that protect the environment, reflecting our commitment to global sustainability, as outlined below.
EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
-
Our gas-powered utility cart fleet are in the process of being replaced with electric carts.
-
Our mixed gas string trimmers and push mower models are in the process of being replaced with battery powered and electric versions.
-
Fairway Mowers and Triplex Mowers are in the process of being replaced with diesel hybrid mowers.
BUNKER RENOVATION PROGRAM
-
The Bunker Renovation Program has prevented more than 6000+ tires from being dumped in the landfill.
-
The tires are shredded and bound together with a polymer to use as a bunker liner which allows the bunkers to be recycled instead of dumped in the landfill.
-
This past year, 5 bunkers have been renovated on the golf course, in addition to the 12 others renovated previously. This brings the total number of renovated bunkers to 17
IRRIGATION SYSTEM
-
We have reduced water output from irrigation systems as well as reduced fertilizer and fuel needed to maintain certain areas. This has ensured we are keeping the “naturalized and montane grass native areas” across the course.
-
We have renovated and re-designed the irrigation in our equipment wash pad area. We’ve installed a pressure reducer valve which has resulted in a 50% reduction in the volume of water required to wash equipment.
-
Our use of soil surfactant wetting agents help with moisture retention on our greens and tee decks, in order to reduce our overall output of irrigation water volume.
TURF CARE
-
Instead of blanket spraying chemicals we are utilizing spot spraying methods to reduce the chemical loads on the golf course.
-
We use mechanical methods to remove weeds instead of herbicide treatments to reduce our use of chemicals.
-
We incorporate naturalized areas around all bodies of water on the course to protect and strengthen the ecosystems.
